Thomas Habte: App Design and Database Management for Machine Learning
During the summer of 2024, I interned with Meloon, a green tech startup based in Berlin, Germany. Meloon focuses on developing cutting-edge membrane technologies for carbon capture and storage. My primary role involved developing a database input app designed to streamline data collection and enable the creation of machine learning algorithms, to optimize membrane performance. At Meloon, my responsibilities were centered on designing and optimizing the cloud-based database and improving the data input app.
Database Architecture and Structure Enhancements
I designed and implemented the structure of the cloud database to ensure efficient and scalable data management. This involved defining the schema and utilizing cloud services such as Google Cloud Platform to set up and manage the database infrastructure. To accommodate the specific needs of the experimental data, I restructured the database by normalizing data tables, optimizing query performance, and ensuring data integrity. These enhancements were critical in making the database more effective for training machine learning models, as well as improving overall data accessibility and reliability.
App Design, Development, and Functionality Improvements
I developed a user-friendly input app that facilitated seamless data entry for experimentalists. The app featured an intuitive interface and real-time data validation to reduce user errors. Based on user feedback, I implemented significant functionality improvements, including optimizing performance, enhancing error-handling features, and streamlining the data entry process. These changes greatly improved the app’s usability and efficiency, making it a valuable tool for data collection.
Cross-Cultural Work Experience
Working in Berlin at a multicultural startup was an enriching experience. I worked closely with a small, diverse team of professionals, including individuals from Germany, India, Iran, and Turkey. The team’s diversity contributed to a dynamic and inclusive work environment. I found the work culture to be casual and friendly, which fostered a collaborative atmosphere. This exposure to different perspectives enhanced my understanding of cross-cultural communication and teamwork.
Living in Berlin
Living in Berlin offered a unique opportunity to experience a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage. I enjoyed exploring the city’s historical landmarks, diverse neighborhoods, and culinary delights. The experience of living in such an international environment broadened my personal and professional horizons and provided me with a deeper appreciation for global perspectives.
Conclusion
My internship at Meloon was a valuable experience that allowed me to apply my skills in database architecture and app development to a meaningful project aimed at advancing green technology. The improvements I made to the data input app and the cloud database contributed significantly to the company’s mission of optimizing carbon-capture technologies. Additionally, the cultural diversity and friendly work environment in Berlin enriched my personal and professional growth, making this internship a memorable and impactful experience.
