Graduate Student Grant Competition

Application and Requirements

Application open March 30 - April 13, 2026

Each Spring The Europe Center (TEC) invites applications from graduate and professional students in the humanities and social sciences whose research focuses on Europe, including politics, economics, history, and culture. The grant is open to both early graduate students exploring a thesis or dissertation topic or acquiring relevant training, as well as advanced students conducting research on approved projects.

A brief written report of the experience must be submitted at the completion of the project. Any publication or presentation should acknowledge the support of “The Europe Center at Stanford University.”

Proposal Criteria

Clear research question.
Significance of project.
Explanation of how the proposed research is relevant to the project. (It is not enough to stipulate that archival research is essential.)
Specific and detailed budget.

Application Timeline

Competition Application Period Opens: Monday, March 30, 2026.
Competition Application Deadline: Monday, April 13, 2026.
Applicants must submit a completed online application including written description of project, budget, resume, unofficial transcript of Stanford courses, and attestation of proficiency in the language(s) if applicable.
There are no citizenship restrictions on these grants.
Winners will be notified by Monday, April 27, 2026.

Grant Restrictions

The Europe Center reserves the right to audit the use of its funds. Recipients are advised to keep a log of all expenses associated with their projects, and to save all receipts in case an audit is requested for any reason. If recipients travel under the award, submission of the used airline ticket upon completion of the project may be required.

Stanford University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University policy and any other applicable regulations. Grant funds cannot be disbursed until IRB approval is received.

GSGC online application

TEC's generosity enabled me to travel to archives and libraries in Switzerland. There, I found new and important evidence about the first century of Romani life in the burgeoning Swiss Confederation, material that will feature in my dissertation.
