Graduate Research and Internship Program in Germany
Internships & Research Visits at German Corporations and Institutions
Summer 2026 Applications due Monday, November 3, 2025
The Europe Center, with support of the Stanford Club of Germany, sponsors summer research visits and internships with German companies and research institutions. Selected graduate students spend 8-12 weeks in Germany pursuing projects such as lab exchanges, artists-in-residence, and collaborative research.
- Students identify target institutions based on curricular expertise and career goals; GRIP provides support in negotiating hosting arrangements.
- While not required, priority is given to students who have identified an internship/research host prior to applying.
- Applicants are encouraged to consider the full range of potential hosts, from startups to established industry players to research institutions.
- Exact start and end dates are determined by the host and student.
- Grants of $8000-$9,000 (prorated by length of travel) are awarded with each internship/research visit.
- Awardees are required to submit a three-page report of their experience within two weeks of their return.
Eligibility
- Currently enrolled graduated students in good standing from all fields of study and all Stanford schools and departments are encouraged to apply. Students on leave are not eligible.
- PhD and master's students (including coterms who have completed their undergraduate degree)
- Participants must not graduate prior to completion of their summer internship or research visit.
- Fluency in German is not required, though serious language study is encouraged prior to departure.
Application
- Applicants must submit a completed application on SOLO.
- Supporting documents: 1-2 page statement of interest, resume/CV, unofficial Stanford transcript .
- Applicants in their first quarter at Stanford should include their unofficial undergraduate transcript along with their unofficial Stanford transcript showing Fall quarter enrollment.
- No letter of recommendation is required (or accepted), but a Stanford faculty member must be included for a possible reference check.
Timeline
- September 22, 2025: Application Opens
- October 9, 2025, 12PM: Information Session Recording
- November 3, 2025, 10PM: Application Deadline
- November 12, 2025: Students selected for interviews notified
- November 18, 2025: Interviews (in person or virtual)
- December 2, 2025: Final selection decisions announced
- December 8-11, 2026: Orientation (date/time tbc)
- January-April 2026: Preparation for internship or research visit
- May 2026: Grants disbursed through GFS
- Summer 2026 (June 12-September 19): Internship or research visit
